Xanthorrhoea australis Details

Xanthorrhoea australis, commonly known as the Grass-Tree or Blackboy Tree, is an Australian native grown for its interesting form and foliage. The fine and grass-like foliage is bright green and as it ages, it forms a skirt of dead leaves. These can easily be removed to reveal the dark, near black trunk. It often grows as a branched tree to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide. Best performance with this plant is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of extended dry periods, moderate frost, and poor soils but will not cope with heavy and wet soils. Xanthorrhoea australis is commonly grown as a specimen where something unusual yet attractive is required. It is also well suited to including in a mixed planting, pool gardens, or for complementing modern architecture.
