How to grow Xanthorrhoea australis (Grass-Tree) in NZ

Xanthorrhoea australis grows best in full sun with very well drained soil. Choose a warm, open position and avoid heavy or waterlogged soils. Water regularly during establishment, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering. Once established it is highly drought tolerant. Apply a low phosphorus native plant fertiliser in spring if required.

Xanthorrhoea australis (Grass-Tree) care tips

Avoid disturbing the root system once planted, as Grass-Trees prefer to remain undisturbed. Remove old or damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy and water only during prolonged dry periods once established. Ensure excellent drainage at all times, particularly during winter, to promote long term health.

Xanthorrhoea australis (Grass-Tree) size, spacing, and growth rate

Xanthorrhoea australis typically reaches 2 to 4 metres tall including the trunk and foliage, with a spread of 1 to 2 metres. Space plants at least 2 metres apart so each specimen can develop naturally. Growth is very slow, making this an enduring architectural feature plant.

Landscaping uses for Xanthorrhoea australis (Grass-Tree)

Xanthorrhoea australis is ideal as a feature specimen in rock gardens, coastal landscapes, contemporary gardens, and drought tolerant plantings. Its unique silhouette provides year round architectural interest and combines beautifully with grasses, succulents, and other Australian native plants.
