Ulmus pumila, commonly known as the Siberian Elm, this is a fast-growing tree with colourful foliage. The leaves emerge light green in spring, age to dark green, then develop colourful golden-yellow tones in autumn before falling. Small, red coloured flowers are borne in spring before the leaves emerge and are generally regarded as insignificant. These result in winged seeds (samatras) in autumn. Siberian Elm trees grow with an upright and vase shape, to eventually reach 20 m tall and 10 m wide, and tends to broaden out as it matures. Best performance with this tree is achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, poor soils, and dry periods but strong winds can cause branches to break. Ulmus pumila is commonly grown as a specimen or shade tree in parks and large gardens, or used in avenue plantings.
