The leaves emerge a lime-green colour in spring, age to mid-green, then develop orange tones in autumn before falling. It grows with an upright and broad habit to about 12 m tall and the same wide, though can be trimmed as necessary. Ulmus glabra horizontalis is commonly grown as a specimen and makes for a wonderful shade tree.

Ulmus glabra horizontalis is a variety of Scotch Elm which is grown for its broad canopy and colourful foliage. The leaves emerge a lime-green colour in spring, age to mid-green, then develop orange tones in autumn before falling. It grows with an upright and broad habit to about 12 m tall and the same wide, though can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site with some shelter. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, poor soils, and dry periods. Ulmus glabra horizontalis is commonly grown as a specimen and makes for a wonderful shade tree.
