Toona ciliata, commonly known as Australian Red Cedar, Toon, or Indian Cedar, is a large tree that grows to 40 m tall and 15 m wide. It is an interesting tree that develops a large, buttressed root system and even as a juvenile tree, the buttress is identifiable. The foliage on this deciduous tree emerges red-pink, ages to dark green, then develops yellow tones before falling. Small white to soft pink flowers are borne in spring which develop into woody capsules. This tree grows best in full sun on a well-drained site though it is tolerant of dry periods, frost, and cool climates. Toona ciliata is commonly used for timber production and makes for a fantastic specimen if you have the room.
