Large-leaved Lime, Large-leaved Linden, Broad-leaved Lime, European Lime, Summer Linden

Tilia platyphyllos, commonly known as Large-Leaved Linden, is a stately deciduous tree admired for its broad, heart-shaped leaves and fragrant summer flowers. In New Zealand, it’s valued for its graceful form, dense foliage, and ability to provide excellent shade. Reaching 20–30 m tall, it suits parks, extensive gardens, and avenue plantings. The pale-yellow flowers attract bees, making it a favourite for pollinator-friendly landscapes. It thrives in deep, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.

How to grow Tilia platyphyllos in NZ

Plant Tilia platyphyllos in a sunny to partly shaded position with deep, fertile, and well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first few years. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk. This tree is wind-tolerant once established but prefers some shelter in very exposed areas. Minimal pruning is needed—remove dead or crowded branches in winter.

Size, growth rate, and tree spacing

Tilia platyphyllos typically grows 20–30 m tall and 10–15 m wide at maturity, with a moderate to fast growth rate of 30–60 cm per year. When planting, allow at least 8–10 m between trees to accommodate its broad canopy and promote healthy growth. This generous spacing ensures good airflow, reduces competition for resources, and allows the tree’s full form to develop, making it ideal for large gardens, parks, or avenue plantings.
