Syzygium maire (Swamp Maire)

Growing Syzygium maire Successfully in NZ

Syzygium maire (Swamp maire) thrives in damp, boggy, or seasonally wet soils, making it ideal for rain gardens, riparian zones, and low-lying areas. It prefers full sun to partial shade and can tolerate occasional flooding. While it naturally occurs in wetland environments, it will also grow well in regular garden soil if kept moist. Protect young plants from heavy frost, and water regularly during dry spells to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is hardy and resilient.

Syzygium maire Care Tips

Swamp maire is low-maintenance once established but benefits from extra care in its early years. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods, to mimic its natural wetland habitat. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from direct contact with the trunk. Protect young plants from heavy frost and wind. Pruning is rarely needed but can help shape the tree or remove deadwood. It’s generally pest-resistant and well-suited to wet, sheltered areas.

Plant Size and Spacing

Syzygium maire (Swamp maire) typically grows 8–15 metres tall and 4–6 metres wide, forming a dense, rounded canopy. When planting for restoration or landscape use, space trees 3–5 metres apart to allow room for mature growth and good airflow. In home gardens or riparian projects, adjust spacing according to site conditions and the desired canopy coverage.
