Kowhai Sophora microphylla

The Kowhai Sophora microphylla features attractive fern-like foliage and a distinct juvenile stage. Young trees have tangled branches and may take up to 10 years to flower. When trees do begin to flower, they produce masses of yellow flowers through spring with nectar that is great for attracting birds and bees. As trees age the branching becomes more open and it will eventually reach 10 m tall and 6 m wide. The Kowhai Sophora microphylla is hardy to cool climates, wind, and poorer soils but should be planted in full sun on a well-drained site for best results. This Kowhai is commonly used as a shade tree, grown as a specimen, included in a native planting, or planted to attract birds.

Sophora microphylla Growing Conditions

The best growing conditions for Sophora microphylla is a full sun position on a well-drained site. While this variety can tolerate moderate wind, young trees should be well-staked to ensure they produce a nicely formed tree and avoid any breakages that could occur with wind. Sophora microphylla will also tolerate cool climates, frost, poorer soils, light shade, and coastal environments. That said, anything that can be done to improve the growing conditions for Sophora microphylla will result in a stronger and faster growing tree. Be sure to apply native plant fertiliser during spring and do not put any fertiliser in the hole at planting.
