Growing conditions for Sophora microphylla

Sophora microphylla (Weeping Kowhai) prefers a sunny to partially shaded position with well-drained soil. It thrives in a range of soil types, including clay, provided it does not become waterlogged. This hardy native tolerates dry conditions once established and can withstand light frosts. While it benefits from occasional watering during dry spells, it generally requires minimal care. Plant in a sheltered spot to protect young trees from strong winds until well established.

Planting and Care Advice

When planting Sophora microphylla (Weeping Kowhai), choose a sunny, sheltered site with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and mix in compost to boost soil fertility. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water regularly during the first summer to help establish strong roots. Minimal pruning is needed; remove dead or crossing branches in late winter. Once established, the tree is hardy and low-maintenance.
