Sophora microphylla is a variety of Kowhai that features attractive fern-like foliage and a distinct juvenile stage. Young trees have tangled branches and may take up to 10 years to flower. When trees do begin to flower, they produce masses of yellow flowers through spring with nectar that is great for attracting birds and bees. As trees age the branching becomes more open and it will eventually reach 10 m tall and 6 m wide. Sophora microphylla is hardy to cool climates, wind, and poorer soils but should be planted in full sun on a well-drained site for best results. This Kowhai is commonly used as a shade tree, grown as a specimen, included in a native planting, or planted to attract birds.
