Schotia brachypetala

Weeping Boer-Bean

Schotia brachypetala is a medium-sized tree which is grown for its form, flowers, and ability to grow on poor soils. This evergreen produces mid-green foliage off somewhat arching branches. Bright red flowers are produced in spring which literally transform the tree. The flowers are filled with nectar and are great for attracting birds. It grows with a rounded canopy to about 15 m tall and 8 m wide, but may grow bigger than this on fertile sites. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site that does not get frosted. It is tolerant of hot and dry climates, but will benefit from being cared for while it establishes. This tree is commonly grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting in a larger garden, used to border an entrance, or included in avenue plantings.
