Salix pentandra (Bay Willow)

Salix pentandra, commonly known as Bay Willow, is a handsome deciduous tree recognised for its glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant yellow catkins in late spring. The lustrous foliage and upright growth habit give it a refined, ornamental appeal, while its hardiness and adaptability make it easy to grow in New Zealand. Ideal for damp areas, shelter planting, or as a specimen tree, Bay Willow adds seasonal interest and year-round greenery to large gardens and landscapes.

How to grow Salix pentandra in NZ

Plant in full sun to partial shade in fertile, moist, free-draining soil. Bay Willow thrives near ponds, streams, or other damp areas but will also tolerate ordinary garden soils. Water regularly during establishment, then only during extended dry periods. Prune in winter to maintain structure, remove damaged wood, and encourage healthy new growth.

Salix pentandra care tips

Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Feed annually in spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote strong growth and healthy foliage. Remove suckers from the base to maintain a clean trunk. Watch for aphids or caterpillars and treat promptly if needed.

Salix pentandra size, spacing, and growth rate

Bay Willow typically grows 10–15 m tall and 6–8 m wide, with a moderate to fast growth rate. Allow ample room for its root spread and canopy when planting.
