How to grow Salix matsudana ‘Pendula’ in NZ

Plant in full sun with fertile, free-draining soil, though it will tolerate heavier, wetter ground. Water regularly during establishment, especially in drier climates. Prune in winter to maintain shape, remove damaged branches, and highlight the attractive twisted form. Avoid planting close to drains, buildings, or paving, as roots can be vigorous.

Salix matsudana ‘Pendula’ care tips

Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and reduce weeds. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote healthy growth. Remove suckers from the base to maintain a clean trunk. Cut stems can be dried and used in decorative floral arrangements.

Salix matsudana ‘Pendula’ size, spacing, and growth rate

Curly Willow typically grows 8–12 m tall and 5–7 m wide with a fast growth rate. Allow ample space for the canopy and root spread when planting.
