Salix humboldtiana (Humboldt's Willow)

Salix humboldtiana, commonly known as Humboldt’s Willow, is a tall, fast-growing deciduous tree native to the Americas. It features long, narrow green leaves and a graceful, upright habit, often forming a loose, weeping canopy. Thriving in wet or riparian areas, it is ideal for large landscapes, shelter planting, and erosion control. Hardy and adaptable, Humboldt’s Willow performs well in a range of New Zealand climates, adding height, movement, and seasonal interest to expansive garden or farm settings.

How to grow Salix humboldtiana in NZ

Plant in full sun with fertile, moist, free-draining soil. This willow thrives near rivers, lakes, or wetlands and tolerates periodic flooding. Water regularly during the first year to establish roots, then only in extended dry periods. Prune in winter to remove damaged wood or to shape the canopy. Avoid planting near drains, buildings, or paved areas as the roots can be vigorous.

Salix humboldtiana care tips

Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Feed annually in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser to promote strong growth. Remove suckers from the base to maintain a clean trunk. Watch for aphids or leaf beetles in summer and treat promptly if needed.

Salix humboldtiana size, spacing, and growth rate

Humboldt’s Willow can reach 15–25 m tall and 6–10 m wide, with a fast growth rate. Allow plenty of space for its root spread and canopy when planting in open areas.
