Salix caprea (Pussy Willow, Goat Willow)

Salix caprea, commonly known as Pussy Willow or Goat Willow, is a hardy, deciduous tree prized for its soft, silvery-grey catkins that appear in late winter to early spring, often before the leaves. These early blooms provide valuable pollen for bees and signal the start of the season. With its attractive form and easy-care nature, Salix caprea thrives in a variety of soil types across New Zealand and makes a beautiful addition to gardens and landscapes.

How to grow Salix caprea in NZ

Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, fertile, free-draining soil. This willow tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay, and grows well near water features. Water regularly during establishment, then only during prolonged dry spells. Prune in late winter after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new shoots for next season’s catkins.

Salix caprea care tips

Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Feed annually in spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote healthy growth and abundant catkins. Watch for aphids in summer and treat promptly if needed. Remove any suckers from the base to maintain a clean form.

Landscaping Uses for Salix caprea

Salix caprea is ideal for adding early spring interest to gardens and landscapes, with its furry catkins appearing before most other plants come into bloom. It makes a beautiful feature tree near patios, water features, or in mixed borders, and is perfect for attracting pollinators. Its moderate size suits smaller gardens as well as larger properties, while its tolerance of heavier soils makes it a good choice for damp or low-lying areas.
