How to grow Salix babylonica in NZ

Plant Weeping Willows in full sun with moist, fertile, free-draining soil. They thrive near ponds, lakes, or streams where roots can access consistent moisture. Water regularly during establishment, then only in extended dry periods if planted away from water. Prune in winter to maintain structure and remove damaged wood. Avoid planting near drains, pipes, or foundations, as roots can be invasive.

Salix babylonica care tips

Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Weeping Willows benefit from an annual feed of general-purpose fertiliser in spring to promote lush growth. Watch for pests such as aphids or caterpillars, and treat promptly if needed. In windy sites, young trees may need staking until established.

Landscaping uses for Salix babylonica

Salix babylonica is perfect for planting beside ponds, lakes, and streams where its graceful, cascading branches can be reflected in the water. It makes a stunning focal point in large lawns or park-like settings, providing dappled shade in summer and dramatic structure in winter. This tree is ideal for creating a natural, tranquil atmosphere in expansive gardens, rural properties, and public landscapes, and is often used to stabilise soil along water edges.

Salix babylonica size, spacing, and growth rate

This tree can reach 15–25 m tall and 10–20 m wide at maturity, with a fast growth rate. Space well away from buildings and underground services to allow for its expansive root system and canopy.
