How to grow Quercus suber (Cork Oak) in NZ

Quercus suber, or Cork Oak, grows well in NZ in full sun and well-drained soil, preferring slightly acidic to neutral conditions. It is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in warm, sheltered sites. Water regularly during the first few years to develop deep roots, then only in prolonged dry periods. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring, and mulch around the base to conserve moisture. Prune in late winter to remove damaged or crossing branches and protect young trees from frost.

Quercus suber (Cork Oak) care tips

Water young Quercus suber trees regularly during dry periods to encourage strong root development, then reduce watering once established. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crossing branches, and protect young trees from frost and mechanical damage to preserve the corky bark.

Tree size, spacing, and growth rate

Quercus suber typically grows 10–15 m tall and 8–12 m wide with a slow to moderate growth rate. Space trees at least 8–10 m apart to allow for their broad canopy and extensive root system.
