Quercus rubra (Northern Red Oak)

5 from 1 customers

Quercus rubra, commonly known as the Northern Red Oak tree, is a deciduous tree that features very colourful and lush foliage. The foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to dark green, then changes to impressive shades of red-brown in autumn before falling. Small, yellow-green flowers in spring produce brown acorns in autumn. The Northern Red Oak tree typically grows to 18 m tall and 10 m wide with a somewhat conical and open growth habit. Quercus rubra is commonly grown as a specimen in extensive gardens and parks, and is also well suited to avenue planting or growing anywhere the beautiful autumn colours can be appreciated.

How to grow Quercus rubra (Northern Red Oak) in NZ

Quercus rubra, or Northern Red Oak, grows well in NZ in full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Choose a spacious site to accommodate its broad canopy and showcase its striking red autumn foliage. Water regularly during the first few years to establish deep roots, then only in prolonged dry periods. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Prune in late winter to remove damaged or crossing branches and maintain a strong framework.

Quercus rubra care tips

Water young Quercus rubra regularly during dry spells to encourage strong root development, then reduce watering once established. Mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and protect young trees from strong winds until well anchored.

Tree size, spacing, and growth rate

Quercus rubra typically grows 20–25 m tall and 15–18 m wide with a moderate growth rate. Space trees at least 10–12 m apart to allow for their broad canopy and healthy airflow.
