How to grow Quercus rubra 'Maxima' in NZ

Quercus rubra ‘Maxima’, a form of Northern Red Oak, grows best in NZ in full sun and fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Choose a spacious site to accommodate its large size and showcase its rich red autumn colour. Water regularly during the first few years to establish deep roots, then only in extended dry periods. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Prune in late winter to remove damaged or crossing branches.

Quercus rubra 'Maxima' care tips

Water young Quercus rubra ‘Maxima’ regularly during dry spells to encourage strong root development, then reduce watering once established. Mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and vibrant autumn foliage. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and protect young trees from strong winds until well anchored.

Tree size, spacing, and growth rate

Quercus rubra ‘Maxima’ typically grows 20–25 m tall and 15–18 m wide with a moderate growth rate. Space trees at least 10–12 m apart to allow for their broad canopy and healthy airflow.
