Commonly known as the Red Oak, this deciduous tree features very colourful and lush foliage. The foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to dark green, then changes to impressive shades of red-brown in autumn before falling. Small, yellow-green flowers in spring produce brown acorns in autumn. This spectacular tree typically grows to 18 m tall and 10 m wide with a somewhat conical and open growth habit. It performs best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun, and is tolerant of frost, cool climates, heavy soils, and some wind. The Red Oak is commonly grown as a specimen in large gardens and parks with the added advantage of fantastic summer shade. It is also well suited to avenue planting or growing anywhere the beautiful autumn colours can be appreciated.
