5 from 1 customers

Quercus robur, commonly known as the English Oak tree or Pedunculate Oak, is a large and stately, deciduous tree. This Oak tree typically grows to 25 m tall and 15 m wide with a broad and spreading crown. The foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to dark green, then lightens only slightly before falling in autumn. Small, yellow-green flowers in spring produce brown acorns in autumn. Quercus robur is commonly grown as a specimen in large gardens and parks with the added advantage of fantastic summer shade.

How to grow Quercus robur (English Oak) in NZ

Quercus robur, or English Oak, grows well in NZ when planted in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a spacious site, as this tree can become very large over time. Water regularly during establishment, then only in extended dry periods once mature. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Protect young trees from stock and strong winds, and prune only to remove damaged or crossing branches.

Quercus robur (English Oak) care tips for NZ

Water young Quercus robur trees regularly during dry periods to help establish strong roots. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk. Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser. Prune only in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Protect from stock and mechanical damage, as the bark is easily injured when young.

Tree size, spacing, and growth rate

Quercus robur typically grows 20–30 m tall and 15–25 m wide at maturity, with a slow to moderate growth rate. Space trees at least 15–20 m apart to allow for their expansive canopy and root spread.
