Quercus robur 'Fastigiata', commonly known as the English Columnar Oak or Cypress Oak, is a deciduous tree with lovely foliage and great form. This majestic beauty typically grows to 15 m tall and 5 m wide with a columnar-conical growth habit. The foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to dark green, then lightens only slightly in autumn before falling. Small, yellow-green flowers in spring produce brown acorns in autumn. Quercus robur 'Fastigiata' is an ideal tree for avenue planting, growing in smaller spaces where a taller tree is required, planting for screening, or growing as a specimen in a park or large garden.

How to grow Quercus robur 'Fastigiata' in NZ

Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’, or Upright English Oak, grows well in NZ in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Its narrow, columnar form makes it ideal for avenues, formal plantings, and smaller spaces. Water regularly during establishment, then only in extended dry periods. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth. Prune in late winter to remove damaged or crossing branches and maintain its upright shape, and protect young trees from strong winds until established.

Quercus robur 'Fastigiata' care tips

Water young Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’ trees regularly during dry periods to establish deep roots, then reduce watering once established. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove damaged or crossing branches and maintain its upright shape. Protect young trees from strong winds until well established.

Tree size, spacing, and growth rate

Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’ typically grows 10–15 m tall and 3–5 m wide with a slow to moderate growth rate. Space trees 3–5 m apart in formal plantings or further apart if used as individual specimens to allow for their narrow, upright form.
