Quercus petraea (Sessile Oak)

How to grow Quercus petraea (Sessile Oak) in NZ

Quercus petraea, or Sessile Oak, grows well in NZ in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. This long-lived, hardy oak tolerates a range of soil types, including slightly acidic conditions, and is ideal for larger landscapes. Water regularly during the first few years to establish deep roots, then only in prolonged dry periods. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring, mulch around the base to conserve moisture, and prune in late winter to remove damaged or crossing branches.

Quercus petraea (Sessile Oak) care tips

Water young Quercus petraea trees regularly during dry periods to establish strong roots, then reduce watering once mature. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser to promote healthy growth. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and protect young trees from strong winds and stock until well established.

Tree size, spacing, and growth rate for Quercus petraea (Sessile Oak)

Quercus petraea typically grows 20–30 m tall and 15–25 m wide with a slow to moderate growth rate. Space trees at least 15–20 m apart to accommodate their broad canopy and allow for healthy airflow.

Landscaping uses for Quercus petraea (Sessile Oak)

Use Quercus petraea (Sessile Oak) for specimen planting, spacious gardens, and landscape focal points.
