Quercus palustris, commonly known as Pin Oak, this is a popular, medium-sized, deciduous tree featuring impressive autumn colours. The foliage emerges in a light green in spring, matures to become glossy and dark green, then develops very colourful red and orange tones in autumn before falling. Yellow-green flowers appear in spring as the leaves emerge and result in acorns which attract a variety of wildlife. The Pin Oak has bark that is smooth, grey-brown, and develops ridges with age. It grows to about 20 m tall and 15 m wide with a broad crown and performs best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, heavy soils, and some wind. Quercus palustris is widely planted in avenues or grown as a specimen in large gardens and parks with the added advantage of fantastic summer shade.
