Quercus mexicana (Mexican Oak)

Quercus mexicana, commonly known as the Mexican Oak tree, is a large, deciduous tree with colourful foliage. The Mexican Oak tree typically grows to 15 m tall and 8 m wide with an upright and somewhat sporadic growth habit. The foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to dark green, then develops impressive yellow tones in autumn before falling. Small, yellow-green flowers in spring produce brown acorns in autumn. Quercus mexicana is commonly grown as a specimen in large gardens and parks where it will provide wonderful summer shade and fabulous autumn colours.

How to grow the Mexican Oak (Quercus mexicana) in NZ

Quercus mexicana, or Mexican Oak, grows well in NZ in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. This semi-evergreen oak prefers a warm, sheltered position and is tolerant of light frost once established. Water regularly during the first few years to develop deep roots, then only in extended dry periods. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage strong growth, and mulch around the base to conserve moisture. Prune in late winter to remove damaged or crossing branches.

Mexican Oak (Quercus mexicana) care tips

Water young Mexican Oak (Quercus mexicana) trees regularly during dry spells to establish strong roots, then reduce watering once established. Mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and protect young trees from strong winds until well established.

Tree size, spacing, and growth rate

Quercus mexicana typically grows 12–18 m tall and 8–12 m wide with a moderate growth rate. Space trees at least 8–10 m apart to allow for their canopy spread and healthy airflow.
