How to grow Quercus ilex in NZ

Quercus ilex, also known as Holm Oak, grows well in NZ in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating a wide range of soil types once established. This hardy evergreen is drought, wind, and coastal tolerant, making it ideal for exposed or dry sites. Water regularly during establishment, then only in prolonged dry periods. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring and prune lightly to shape or remove damaged branches. Protect young trees from stock until well rooted.

Quercus ilex care tips for NZ

Water young Quercus ilex trees regularly during dry spells to help establish deep roots, then reduce watering once established. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove damaged or crossing branches, and protect young trees from strong winds and grazing stock.

Tree size, spacing, and growth rate

Quercus ilex typically grows 15–25 m tall and 10–15 m wide with a slow to moderate growth rate. Space trees at least 10–12 m apart to allow for their broad, dense canopy and extensive root system.
