Quercus ellipsoidalis, commonly known as the Northern Pin Oak tree, is a deciduous tree that features colourful autumn foliage. The foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to dark green, then develops impressive red and orange colours in autumn before falling. Small, yellow-green flowers in spring produce brown acorns in autumn. The Northern Pin Oak typically grows to 12 m tall and 8 m wide with a rounded and somewhat open crown. It performs best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun, though it is tolerant of frost, cool climates, heavy soils, and some wind. Quercus ellipsoidalis is widely planted in avenues or grown as a specimen in large gardens and parks with the added advantage of fantastic summer shade.
