Quercus castaneifolia (Chestnut Oak)

Quercus castaneifolia, commonly known as the Chestnut Oak or Chestnut Leaf Oak, is a large, deciduous tree with lovely, colourful foliage. The Chestnut Oak will typically grow to 30 m tall and 15 m wide with a rounded, open growth habit. The foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to dark green, then develops impressive yellow and brown tones in autumn before falling. Small, yellow-green flowers in spring produce brown acorns in autumn. Quercus castaneifolia is ideal for extensive gardens and parks, as a shade tree, or for planting anywhere the beautiful autumn colours can be appreciated.

How to grow Quercus castaneifolia in NZ

Quercus castaneifolia, or Chestnut-leaved Oak, grows well in NZ in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. This large, hardy tree is tolerant of a range of soil types and conditions once established. Water regularly during the first few years to encourage deep root growth, then only in prolonged dry periods. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote strong growth, and mulch around the base to retain soil moisture. Prune in late winter to remove damaged or crossing branches.

Quercus castaneifolia (Chestnut Oak) care tips

Water young Quercus castaneifolia trees regularly during dry periods to establish strong roots, then reduce watering once mature. Mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and protect young trees from strong winds until well established.

Tree size, spacing, and growth rate

Quercus castaneifolia typically grows 20–25 m tall and 12–15 m wide with a moderate growth rate. Space trees at least 10–12 m apart to allow for their broad canopy and healthy airflow.
