Pseudopanax ferox, commonly known as Fierce or Toothed Lancewood as well as Horoeka, is a NZ native tree that features interesting juvenile and mature forms. The juvenile leaves are long and slender with strongly toothed margins while the adult form is much bushier and has a braided appearance. The standout feature of Pseudopanax ferox is its fierce, toothed juvenile leaves—long, narrow, and dark with deeply serrated margins that point downward. This unique form can persist for several years before the tree transitions into its mature form, where it develops a rounded canopy with broader, softer leaves. This transformation creates a living sculpture that adds drama and character to any landscape.

Subtle Flowers Add Seasonal Native Interest

While the foliage takes centre stage, Pseudopanax ferox also produces small greenish flowers during summer. These may go unnoticed due to their subtlety, but they play an important role in supporting biodiversity. Female trees produce purplish-black berries in autumn, providing a seasonal food source for native birds like tūī and kererū.

A Hardy Native Tree Suitable for Modern NZ Gardens

Pseudopanax ferox is tolerant of wind, coastal exposure, drought, and light frosts once established. It grows best in full sun or part shade with well-draining soil. Its upright, vertical habit makes it ideal for narrow spaces, modern landscaping, pool areas, or mixed native plantings. With minimal pruning requirements, it’s also great for low-maintenance gardens.
