How to successfully grow Pseudopanax ferox in NZ

To successfully grow Pseudopanax ferox (Toothed Lancewood) in New Zealand, choose a sunny to partly shaded site with well-drained soil. This hardy native tolerates wind, drought, and frost once established. Water regularly during the first year to support root development. Avoid wet or poorly drained sites, especially in colder regions. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. It grows slowly but steadily, transitioning over time from its dramatic juvenile form to a small tree with a rounded canopy.

Pseudopanax ferox Care Tips

Pseudopanax ferox is a hardy and low-maintenance plant. Water young plants regularly during the first year, especially in dry conditions. Once established, it is drought and wind-tolerant. Plant in well-drained soil and avoid overly wet or boggy areas. It prefers full sun to partial shade. Pruning is rarely necessary, although damaged or lower leaves can be removed for aesthetic purposes. Mulching helps retain moisture and keeps weeds down around the base of the plant.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Pseudopanax ferox typically grows to 3–5 metres tall and about 2–3 metres wide. Space plants 1.5 to 2 metres apart if planting in groups or for visual impact. It has a slow to moderate growth rate, especially in the juvenile stage, taking many years to develop its distinctive adult canopy form. Growth speeds up slightly once established in warm, well-drained conditions.

Does Pseudopanax ferox (Fierce Lancewood) attract birds?

Yes, Pseudopanax ferox (Fierce Lancewood) attracts birds. Its small flowers produce nectar that can attract native pollinators, and the berries that follow are eaten by birds such as kererū. The tree also offers shelter once mature, making it a valuable addition to bird-friendly and native gardens in New Zealand.
