Prunus 'Ichiyo'

Prunus 'Ichiyo' is an elegant deciduous flowering tree prized for its spectacular spring blossom and graceful spreading form. Its abundant blossom and attractive branching habit make it particularly effective where a refined and impressive spring focal point is wanted.

How to grow Prunus 'Ichiyo' in NZ

Prunus 'Ichiyo' grows best in full sun with fertile, free draining soil and good air movement around the canopy. Choose a position where the spreading crown has enough room to develop naturally and where the spring flowers can be appreciated. Plant into well prepared soil enriched with organic matter and water regularly while the root system establishes. Continue watering during prolonged dry periods, particularly while the tree is young. Apply a general garden fertiliser during spring and mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and suppress weeds while keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Full sun generally encourages healthy growth and the strongest flowering display.

Prunus 'Ichiyo' care tips

Prunus 'Ichiyo' is relatively easy to maintain once established. Water deeply during prolonged dry periods, particularly while the tree is young, and apply a balanced garden fertiliser during spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. Maintain a layer of mulch around the root zone while keeping it clear of the trunk. Pruning should generally be limited to removing dead, damaged, crossing, or poorly positioned branches while preserving the natural spreading form. If pruning is required, undertake it after flowering and avoid unnecessary heavy pruning. Good air movement around the canopy and regular removal of fallen leaves will also help maintain a healthy and attractive specimen.

Prunus 'Ichiyo' size, spacing, and growth rate

Prunus 'Ichiyo' develops into a medium sized deciduous tree and commonly reaches around 5 to 7 m tall and approximately 5 to 7 m wide at maturity. Growth is moderate, with the canopy gradually developing a broad and spreading form. Allow generous space from buildings, boundaries, overhead services, and neighbouring trees so the crown can develop naturally. When planting several specimens, spacing of approximately 5 to 7 m allows individual canopies to mature without excessive crowding. Providing adequate space from the outset allows the attractive branching habit to develop properly and reduces the need for substantial corrective pruning later.

Landscaping uses for Prunus 'Ichiyo'

Prunus 'Ichiyo' is an outstanding landscaping tree for creating spectacular spring colour and seasonal structure in New Zealand gardens. Plant it as a specimen in a lawn, beside a broad entranceway, within a larger mixed border, or use several trees to create an impressive repeated display. The masses of double pink flowers make it particularly effective where the tree can be viewed from outdoor living areas or prominent garden positions. Its broad canopy provides attractive summer structure, while the deciduous habit allows winter light into surrounding spaces. Prunus 'Ichiyo' works beautifully in traditional, Japanese inspired, cottage, and contemporary landscapes.
