Growing Podocarpus totara Successfully in NZ

Totara grows best in full sun or partial shade with free-draining soil. It is highly tolerant of wind, frost, and dry periods once established, making it ideal for a range of New Zealand conditions. While it naturally thrives in lowland forests, it also adapts well to urban gardens and lifestyle blocks. Mulching around young plants helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular watering in the first year encourages strong root development and healthy growth.

Podocarpus totara Care Tips

Totara is low-maintenance once established, but young plants benefit from a little extra care. Water regularly during the first growing season, especially in dry periods. Ensure young trees are staked for added stability, and this also helps create a better tree in the long term. Apply mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weed competition. Prune lightly to shape or remove lower branches if needed. Fertilise annually in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to promote steady growth. Watch for scale insects or sooty mould in humid conditions and treat if necessary. Avoid waterlogged soils, as Totara must have good drainage.

Plant Size and Spacing

Podocarpus totara typically grows 20–25 m tall and 5–8 m wide in cultivation, though it can reach greater heights with optimal growing conditions. When planting for screening or shelter, space trees 4–6 m apart. For specimen planting, allow at least 6 m of space to accommodate its broad, pyramidal form.
