Podocarpus laetus, commonly known as Mountain Totara, is an elegant NZ native tree grown for its great stature and tidy form. It features small leaves which are held somewhat densely off sturdy branches. As the tree matures the leave size increases. It typically grows with a single trunk and has flaky, paper-like bark, eventually reaching 20 m tall and 12 m wide with a trunk that can become over 1 m in diameter. This evergreen grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, exposed positions, and coastal environments but will certainly benefit from being protected while it establishes. Podocarpus laetus makes for a lovely specimen in parks and the like and is also well suited to being included in revegetation plantings.
