Platanus hispanica

Platanus hispanica, commonly known as the London Plane Tree, is a large, deciduous tree grown for its foliage, stature, and showy fruits. The foliage is lush, dark green, and develops a yellow-orange colour before falling in autumn. A distinctive feature of this tree is the brown bark which is shed to reveal a cream-white inner bark resulting in a trunk with a somewhat mottled appearance. It grows with a broad crown, reaching approximately 25 m in height and 20 m in width, and can be trimmed as necessary. Platanus hispanica makes a fantastic shade tree and is commonly grown as a specimen in extensive gardens or parks, or used in an avenue planting.

How to grow Platanus hispanica in NZ

To grow Platanus hispanica in New Zealand, choose a sunny position with deep, fertile, and well-drained soil. This large, deciduous tree is highly tolerant of urban pollution, wind, and a wide range of soils, making it suitable for streets, parks, and extensive gardens. Water regularly during establishment, especially in dry conditions. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in winter if shaping or clearance is needed. Once established, it requires minimal maintenance and has an extremely long lifespan.

Platanus hispanica size and spacing

Platanus hispanica (London Plane) typically grows 20–30 metres tall with a broad canopy spreading 15–20 metres wide. It is best suited to large spaces such as parks, avenues, and expansive gardens. When planting multiple trees, allow at least 10–12 metres between each to accommodate their mature spread and root systems. Ensure ample vertical and horizontal space to support their substantial size and prevent crowding or interference with structures.
