Planchonella costata

Tawapou Tree

Planchonella costata, commonly known as Tawapou, is an attractive, NZ native tree featuring glossy, dark green foliage. Small, green coloured flowers are borne in summer and result in large red-orange berries in autumn which are great for attracting birds. It grows slowly with an upright and tidy habit to about 15 m tall and 8 m wide. Tawapou is most commonly used in revegetation plantings, included in a large garden to attract birds, grown as a specimen, used in avenue plantings, or added to a coastal planting.

Growing Planchonella costata Successfully in NZ

Planchonella costata thrives best in well-drained soils with good air circulation. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it adaptable across many New Zealand garden environments. Water regularly during dry periods to establish strong roots, but avoid waterlogging which can harm the plant. Mulching with organic material helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Site selection is important; sheltered spots protect it from harsh winds and frost.

Planchonella costata Care Tips

Regular pruning of Planchonella costata encourages bushier growth and maintains shape. Remove dead or diseased branches promptly to improve overall plant health. Fertilising annually with a balanced fertiliser supports vigorous foliage and flowering. Keep an eye out for pests like scale or aphids, and treat infestations early with organic options where possible. Proper care ensures your {plant_name} remains a resilient and attractive feature in your garden.

Plant Size and Spacing

Planchonella costata generally grows steadily to its mature size, which varies between species but usually ranges from 1 to 8 metres tall and wide. Allow ample spacing of at least 1 to 4 metres between plants to ensure healthy airflow and reduce disease risk. Appropriate spacing helps plants receive adequate sunlight and nutrients, supporting vigorous growth. Consider mature size when planning your garden layout to avoid overcrowding and maintenance issues.
