Planchonella costata (Tawapou Tree)

Planchonella costata, commonly known as the Tawapou tree, is an attractive, NZ native tree featuring glossy, dark green foliage. Small, green coloured flowers are borne in summer and result in large red-orange berries in autumn, which are great for attracting birds. It grows slowly with an upright and tidy habit to about 15 m tall and 8 m wide. Tawapou is most commonly used in revegetation plantings, included in a large garden to attract birds, grown as a specimen, used in avenue plantings, or added to a coastal planting.

How to grow Planchonella costata (Tawapou Tree) in NZ

Planchonella costata thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers free draining soil. In NZ, it grows naturally in coastal environments and is well adapted to salt spray and sandy soils. Regular watering is required during the establishment period, after which it becomes drought tolerant. Adding compost at planting will support strong root development. With its tough nature and adaptability, Tawapou is an ideal choice for coastal gardens and native restoration plantings.

Planchonella costata (Tawapou Tree) care tips

Caring for Planchonella costata is straightforward. Apply mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a slow release fertiliser in spring to encourage steady growth and fruiting. Pruning is seldom needed, but damaged or overcrowded branches can be removed to maintain shape. Water well during long dry spells, particularly while young. With minimal maintenance, Tawapou will thrive and bring ecological and ornamental value to your NZ garden.

Planchonella costata (Tawapou Tree) size, spacing, and growth rate

Planchonella costata is a medium sized tree that typically grows 6 to 10 metres tall with a similar spread. For group planting or shelterbelts, space plants 4 to 6 metres apart. Growth is moderate, and it steadily develops into a dense, rounded crown that provides excellent shade. Its attractive foliage and ability to produce colourful fruit make it a standout feature in the landscape. Tawapou is particularly well suited for larger gardens, parks, and coastal environments in NZ.

Landscaping uses for Planchonella costata (Tawapou Tree)

Planchonella costata is highly valued in landscaping for its glossy foliage, bird attracting fruit, and resilience to coastal conditions. It is perfect as a feature tree in coastal gardens, native plantings, or as part of an ecological restoration project.
