Pittosporum 'Wrinkled Blue'

Growing Pittosporum Wrinkled Blue Successfully in NZ

Pittosporum ‘Wrinkled Blue’ thrives in New Zealand’s temperate climate and is an excellent choice for hedging, screening, or as a feature shrub. It prefers a sunny to partially shaded position in well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and wind-hardy, making it ideal for coastal or exposed sites. Regular trimming encourages dense growth, mainly when grown as a hedge. Mulching and occasional feeding in spring will keep the foliage vibrant and the plant healthy.

Pittosporum Wrinkled Blue Care Tips

To keep Pittosporum ‘Wrinkled Blue’ looking its best, plant it in a well-drained soil with good sun exposure. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, then reduce watering as it becomes more drought-tolerant. Prune annually to maintain shape and promote bushy growth, particularly if used as a hedge. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy foliage. Mulch around the base to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.

Plant Size and Spacing

Pittosporum ‘Wrinkled Blue’ typically grows to 2.5–3 metres tall and 1.5–2 metres wide. For hedging or screening purposes, space plants approximately 80 cm to 1 metre apart. This spacing allows the plants to grow together evenly while maintaining airflow and encouraging dense, upright growth.
