Pittosporum ralphii

Ralphs Karo

Pittosporum ralphii is a hardy, evergreen native shrub or small tree ideal for hedging, screening, and native planting projects across New Zealand. Known for its narrow, grey-green leaves and upright form, it typically grows to 4–6 metres tall and 3–4 metres wide. The foliage has a subtle silver tone, which softens the appearance of dense planting and adds contrast to green-dominated gardens. In spring, small dark red to purple flowers appear, offering seasonal interest and attracting native insects.

How to grow Pittosporum ralphii in NZ

Plant Pittosporum ralphii in full sun or partial shade with well drained soil for best growth. It is highly tolerant of dry conditions once established and grows well in a wide range of NZ climates. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering as it matures. Pruning can be done to shape the plant or to encourage denser growth. This species is well suited to both urban and rural gardens.

Pittosporum ralphii care tips

Care for Pittosporum ralphii by applying mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and strong foliage. Prune as required to maintain the desired shape or to promote bushier growth. Once established, it is drought tolerant and requires minimal attention, making it easy care for NZ gardens.

Pittosporum ralphii size, spacing, and growth rate

Pittosporum ralphii typically grows 3 to 5 metres tall with a spread of 2 to 3 metres. Plant at least 1.5 to 2 metres apart when creating a hedge or shelter belt. It has a moderate growth rate and will establish relatively quickly in favourable conditions. This size and form make it an excellent choice for screening, shelter, or as a background plant.

Landscaping uses for Pittosporum ralphii

Pittosporum ralphii is perfect for use as a shelter tree, screening plant, or as part of a native planting scheme. Its hardy nature makes it ideal for exposed and coastal areas. It also works well in mixed borders and larger gardens where year round structure is needed. This versatile shrub adds texture, greenery, and resilience to both formal and informal landscapes.
