How to grow Pittosporum ellipticum in NZ

Plant Pittosporum ellipticum in full sun or partial shade with well drained soil for best results. It will grow well in a wide range of NZ conditions, including coastal and exposed sites. Water regularly during establishment to encourage strong root development, then reduce watering once settled. Pruning can be done to maintain shape or encourage denser foliage. This tough native shrub is well suited for both urban and rural gardens.

Pittosporum ellipticum care tips

To care for Pittosporum ellipticum, mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote healthy growth and lush foliage. Prune lightly once or twice a year to maintain the desired form and density. It is drought tolerant once established and requires little ongoing maintenance.

Pittosporum ellipticum size, spacing, and growth rate

Pittosporum ellipticum typically grows 3 to 5 metres tall with a spread of 2 to 3 metres. For hedging or screening, space plants about 1.5 to 2 metres apart. It has a moderate growth rate and establishes relatively quickly in the right conditions. Its size and adaptability make it an excellent choice for structure, privacy, and greenery.
