Pittosporum crassifolium, commonly known as Karo, is a hardy, evergreen shrub or small tree native to New Zealand. It features dense, grey-green leathery leaves and produces small, fragrant purple flowers in spring, followed by sticky seed capsules. How to grow Pittosporum crassifolium in NZ

To grow Pittosporum crassifolium (Karo) successfully in New Zealand, plant it in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. It’s highly tolerant of coastal conditions, wind, drought, and poor soils, making it ideal for tough sites. Water regularly while establishing, then only during extended dry periods. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth. Prune lightly after flowering to shape or maintain density, mainly when grown as a hedge or shelterbelt.

Pittosporum crassifolium hedge spacing

When used for hedging, Pittosporum crassifolium should be planted 40–50 cm apart. This spacing helps the plants form a dense, even barrier. Closer spacing promotes faster fill-in and encourages more upright growth. Wider spacing may result in a looser, more open hedge, which can be desirable in some informal designs.

Planting and Care Tips

Choose a sunny to partially shaded spot with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and enrich the soil with compost if needed. Water the plant regularly during the first year to help it establish, then reduce watering as it becomes drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser, and prune as needed to shape or maintain density.

Landscape Uses for Pittosporum crassifolium

Pittosporum crassifolium is ideal for hedging, shelterbelts, and coastal planting due to its tolerance of wind, salt spray, and drought. It also works well as a privacy screen, background plant, or structural feature in native and low-maintenance gardens. Its dense foliage and upright growth make it suitable for formal and informal landscape designs. Karo is also excellent for erosion control on exposed sites and blends well with other native New Zealand plants.

Looking to plant a hedge as part of our new build landscape design We have an extreme climate range so we’re looking for a variety of pittosporum that can handle cold winters and hot summers. Like the darker varigated shades. Having said that would be keen to learn if the crassifolium can handle the central Otago climate
