Phyllostachys edulis (Moso Bamboo)

Phyllostachys edulis, commonly known as Moso Bamboo, is a giant timber bamboo admired for its rapid growth and striking upright canes. In New Zealand, it can reach up to 10 metres in ideal conditions, making it a bold feature or privacy screen. The lush green foliage and thick culms offer both beauty and utility. Moso Bamboo prefers a sunny, sheltered position with rich, moist soil and requires space to grow due to its vigorous, spreading nature.

How to grow Phyllostachys edulis in NZ

Phyllostachys edulis grows best in a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, well-drained soil. In New Zealand, plant it in spring or early summer and water regularly during establishment. This bamboo prefers consistent moisture but not waterlogged conditions. Apply mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Because it is a running bamboo, installing a root barrier is recommended to contain its spread. Feed annually with a balanced fertiliser to promote strong, upright culm growth.

Moso Bamboo care tips

Moso Bamboo thrives in full sun with protection from strong winds. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, especially during dry periods. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage lush growth. Prune out old or damaged culms at ground level to maintain a tidy appearance. Use a root barrier or regular trenching to control spread, as it is a vigorous-running bamboo.
