Growing Pennantia corymbosa Successfully in NZ

Pennantia corymbosa (Kaikomako) is a resilient and attractive New Zealand native tree suited to a wide range of growing conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soils, though it will tolerate coastal exposure, wind, and periods of drought once established. Young trees grow upright and slender, gradually developing a broad crown. Kaikomako is ideal for native gardens, revegetation, and attracting birds. Water regularly during establishment to promote strong early growth.

Pennantia corymbosa Care Tips

Water Pennantia corymbosa regularly during its first year to help it establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s tolerant of dry periods and requires minimal care. Mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk. Prune lightly to shape or remove any damaged branches. It grows best in well-drained soil and can handle wind and light coastal exposure. A light fertiliser dressing in spring will help support growth in soils with poor fertility.

Plant Size and Spacing

Pennantia corymbosa typically grows 5–8 metres tall and 3–4 metres wide. For native plantings or shelterbelts, space trees 2.5 to 3 metres apart. In garden settings, allow at least 3 metres between plants or structures to accommodate their mature form.
