Empress Tree, Princess Tree

Commonly known as the Empress Tree, this is a showy tree grown for its impressive flowering. Masses of showy, lilac-blue flowers are borne in clusters in late spring just before the leaves emerge. The flowers transform the tree in a spectacular and eye-catching manner. The leaves emerge mid-green in spring and develop colourful yellow tones in autumn before falling. They are large and held densely. It grows with a conical shape initially and tends to develop a broad crown as it matures, eventually reaching about 10 m tall and 7 m wide. This tree grows best in full sun on a well-drained, moderately sheltered site that does not dry out. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and some wind. The Empress Tree makes for an impressive specimen and suits avenue and park planting. It also makes for a wonderful shade tree.
