How to grow Parrotia persica in NZ

Parrotia persica (Persian Ironwood) grows well in New Zealand’s temperate climate when planted in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. It prefers a sheltered position away from harsh winds and thrives with consistent moisture, especially during dry spells. This deciduous tree is low-maintenance once established and benefits from an annual mulch and occasional pruning to shape. Its vibrant autumn colour and attractive bark make it a standout feature in gardens.

Parrotia persica care tips

Parrotia persica prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in moist, well-drained soil. Water the plant regularly during dry periods, especially while it is establishing. Apply mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Minimal pruning is needed—only remove dead or crossing branches in late winter or early spring. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if growth is slow. Protect young trees from strong winds to maintain a tidy, upright form.

Plant size, growth rate, and spacing

Parrotia persica typically grows 4–7 metres tall and 3–5 metres wide in New Zealand gardens, forming a rounded, spreading tree. It has a slow to moderate growth rate, often adding 20–30 cm per year once established. For optimal development and airflow, space plants 3–5 metres apart, depending on whether you're planting as a specimen tree or in a group.
