How to grow Osmanthus fragrans (Sweet Olive) in NZ

Osmanthus fragrans thrives in a sunny to lightly shaded position with shelter from strong winds. It prefers well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the plant is establishing, but avoid waterlogging. Feed in spring and summer with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to promote healthy growth and fragrant flowering. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage denser foliage. This evergreen shrub is frost-hardy in most NZ regions and is ideal for hedging or as a fragrant feature plant.

Osmanthus fragrans (Tea Olive) care tips

Plant in full sun or partial shade with protection from strong winds. Use well-draining, fertile soil and water regularly during dry spells, especially when young. Feed in spring and summer with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support growth and flowering. Lightly prune after blooming to maintain a tidy shape. This hardy evergreen tolerates light frosts and benefits from mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Osmanthus fragrans typically grows 3–4 m tall and 2–3 m wide, forming a dense, bushy shrub. For hedging, space plants about 1–1.5 m apart to allow them to fill in evenly. Growth is generally slow to moderate, with younger plants establishing more slowly before increasing in speed once settled. In ideal conditions, it can add 20–30 cm of new growth per year.
