Nothofagus solandri (Black Beech)

Growing Nothofagus solandri Successfully in NZ

Nothofagus solandri (Black Beech) is a hardy New Zealand native tree well-suited to a range of conditions. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils. This species is drought-tolerant once established and can handle poor, rocky, or sloping ground. It's ideal for revegetation, shelterbelts, and native gardens. Plant in an open space where it has room to mature, and water regularly during the first year to support establishment.

Nothofagus solandri Care Tips

Water Nothofagus solandri regularly during the first year to help establish strong roots. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. It typically requires little to no pruning, but you can remove dead or crowded branches if needed. Avoid planting in poorly drained soils, as this species prefers free-draining, slightly acidic conditions. Fertilising is generally unnecessary unless the soil is particularly poor.

Plant Size and Spacing for Nothofagus solandri (Black Beech)

Nothofagus solandri (Black Beech) typically grows 10–15 metres tall and 4–6 metres wide. For shelterbelts or revegetation, space trees 3 to 4 metres apart. In garden or landscape settings, allow at least 4 metres of space from other trees or structures to accommodate its mature size.

Landscaping uses for Nothofagus solandri (Black Beech)

Use Nothofagus solandri (Black Beech) for specimen planting, spacious gardens, and landscape focal points.
