Nestegis lanceolata, commonly known as White Maire, is a tall and handsome NZ native tree. It grows with a stout, straight trunk up to 15 m high and bears a broad crown made up of glossy, leathery, dark green leaves. Small, green flowers are produced in spring and are followed by small green fruits which turn red as they ripen. The fruits are great for attracting birds. White Maire produces dense, even-grained timber, that is very hard. It grows best in full sun on a well-drained site and is reasonably tolerant of most soil types. Nestegis lanceolata is most suited for adding to large, native plantings or including in revegetation projects.
