Commonly known as Black Maire, this is a tall and handsome NZ native tree. It grows with a stout, straight trunk up to 23 m high and bears a broad crown made up of glossy, leathery, dark green leaves. Small, green flowers are produced in spring and are followed by small green fruits which turn red as they ripen. The fruits are great for attracting birds. Black Maire produces dense, even-grained timber that is dark brown, streaked with black, and very hard. It grows best in full sun on a well-drained site and is reasonably tolerant of most soil types. This attractive tree is most suited for adding to large, native plantings, including in revegetation projects, or for parks.
