Nestegis apetala, commonly known as Coastal Maire, is a small and handsome NZ native tree. It grows with a stout, straight trunk up to 6 m tall and bears a broad crown, 4 m wide, made up of glossy, leathery, dark green leaves. Small flowers without petals are produced in spring and are followed by small, red-yellow fruits which are great for attracting birds. Nestegis apetala is most suited for adding to native plantings or including in revegetation projects.

Nestegis apetala, commonly known as Coastal Maire, is a small and handsome NZ native tree. It grows with a stout, straight trunk up to 6 m tall and bears a broad crown, 4 m wide, made up of glossy, leathery, dark green leaves. Small flowers without petals are produced in spring and are followed by small, red-yellow fruits which are great for attracting birds. Nestegis apetala grows best in partial shade on a well-drained site though it is reasonably tolerant of most soil types. This attractive tree is most suited for adding to native plantings or including in revegetation projects.
