Growing Neomyrtus pedunculata Successfully in NZ

Neomyrtus pedunculata (Rōhutu) grows best in moist, well-drained soil and prefers a position in full sun to partial shade. It naturally occurs in coastal to lower-montane forests, making it well-suited to a range of New Zealand environments. While tolerant of light frosts and damp conditions, it benefits from some shelter when young. Water regularly during dry periods and mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Plant in an open, well-ventilated spot to reduce the risk of myrtle rust.

Neomyrtus pedunculata care tips

Neomyrtus pedunculata prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil and grows well in full sun to partial shade. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first year after planting. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and reduce weed competition. Light pruning can help shape the plant and remove dead or damaged branches. To reduce the risk of myrtle rust, ensure good airflow around the plant and avoid overhead watering. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth.

Plant size, growth rate, and spacing

Neomyrtus pedunculata is a slow-to-moderate-growing evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach 4–9 metres tall and 2–4 metres wide in ideal conditions. It forms a rounded, bushy habit with attractive foliage and colourful berries. For garden or restoration planting, space plants 1.5–2.5 metres apart to allow for natural shape development and adequate airflow. Closer spacing may be used for shelter or screening purposes.
